Mérida has plenty of formal evening entertainment, but one of the easier nights out requires little more than a blanket and some mosquito repellent.

Cine Bajo las Estrellas, the outdoor cinema at Parque La Plancha, turns part of the park's green space into an informal open-air movie theatre on weekend evenings. People arrive with blankets, low chairs, children, drinks and snacks, then settle onto the grass as daylight disappears.

The screenings are free, and for August 2026 the park is again promoting cinema every Saturday and Sunday.

It is particularly useful for families staying in Mérida, couples looking for a low-key evening, and visitors who want to see how La Plancha is actually used by the city rather than simply walking through it during the daytime.

There is one small timing complication worth knowing. The park's most recent August programme promotes the cinema from 7:00 pm, while some current Mérida event listings continue to show 7:30 pm.

For visitors, the distinction is not especially important: aim to be on the grass by about 6:30 pm. You will have a better choice of position and will not be trying to find a space as the film begins.

The remaining August 2026 dates

The current summer programme at Parque La Plancha runs until August 30, with outdoor cinema advertised on Saturdays and Sundays.

The remaining weekend dates at the time of writing are:

  • Saturday, August 22
  • Sunday, August 23
  • Saturday, August 29
  • Sunday, August 30

The individual movie titles are not being published consistently enough across the park's searchable event information for us to recommend travelling specifically for one particular film.

If the movie itself matters to you, check Parque La Plancha's latest Facebook or Instagram post on the day you plan to go. Weekend posters and programme information can be updated separately from the general monthly calendar.

If you simply want the experience of an outdoor movie in Mérida, arrive regardless. That is arguably the better reason to go.

What the outdoor cinema is actually like

This is not an outdoor version of a multiplex.

The screen is set up beside a grassy area, and much of the audience sits directly on blankets or in portable chairs. Children move around, families bring snacks and people continue arriving as the evening gets underway.

That informality is part of the appeal.

Do not expect cinema-quality darkness or perfect sound during the first part of an early screening. Mérida still has considerable daylight around the beginning of the evening in summer, and La Plancha is an active public park rather than a sealed auditorium.

As darkness settles over the park, the setting becomes considerably better.

For children who struggle with sitting through a conventional cinema visit, the extra space can actually make this format easier. For adults who require silence, air conditioning and a perfectly centred view of the screen, it probably will not.

Where in La Plancha is the cinema?

The screenings take place on the green area around the amphitheatre.

The amphitheatre is one of the easiest large landmarks to identify inside La Plancha and sits beside the park's lake. If you enter from the wrong side, allow a little time to walk across the park: La Plancha covers roughly 20 hectares and is larger than it can appear on a map.

If you arrive while it is still light, look for the temporary projection screen and groups beginning to settle on the grass rather than assuming the movie will necessarily be staged inside the formal amphitheatre seating.

What should you bring?

A little preparation makes a substantial difference.

A blanket

This is the simplest option if you are happy sitting on the grass. A thicker picnic blanket is more comfortable than a towel, particularly if the ground is still damp from an afternoon shower.

A low folding chair

A compact beach or camping chair works well, but be considerate about where you place taller chairs. Sitting farther back prevents you from blocking the view of people on blankets.

Mosquito repellent

Bring it.

La Plancha has water, vegetation and large areas of grass, and Mérida evenings can be very mosquito-friendly, particularly during the wet season.

Apply repellent before the movie starts rather than discovering the problem halfway through the film.

Water

Even after sunset, Mérida can remain hot and humid.

Bring enough drinking water, particularly for children.

Something small to eat

Previous screenings have allowed visitors to settle in with snacks, sweets and drinks, and La Plancha also has food options within the park.

Keep it simple. A picnic that requires half the kitchen tends to become less enjoyable once you are carrying everything across the park in the dark.

And take your rubbish with you when you leave.

August evenings: heat and rain matter

Outdoor cinema makes considerably more sense in Mérida after sunset than it does during the afternoon, but August is still August.

Expect warmth and humidity.

A lightweight shirt, water and insect repellent are more useful than dressing as though you are going to a conventional cinema.

Rain is the other variable.

A brief evening shower can arrive quickly during Yucatán's wet season, and outdoor programming can be delayed or affected by bad weather. If the sky looks uncertain, check the park's social accounts before leaving your hotel.

A compact umbrella or lightweight rain layer is useful, but if sustained rain is forecast this is one activity where changing your evening plans may simply be easier.

Getting to Parque La Plancha

The park's official address is:

Calle 43 No. 429, Colonia Centro, Mérida, Yucatán, 97000.

You do not need a rental car specifically for this activity.

Taxi or rideshare

For most visitors staying around Mérida Centro, a taxi or rideshare is the simplest option.

Have the driver take you to Parque La Plancha rather than trying to navigate to a specific patch of grass. Once inside, head toward the amphitheatre.

For the return journey, walk toward a proper park entrance before requesting your ride. Pin locations inside a large park can be confusing for drivers.

Driving

La Plancha has several parking areas.

Arriving before the cinema crowd builds makes parking easier and also gives you time to find the screening area before dark.

There is little advantage in driving if you are already staying centrally unless you have young children, mobility considerations or a large amount of picnic equipment.

IE-TRAM

La Plancha is also a transport hub for Mérida's electric IE-TRAM system.

That makes public transport a realistic option depending on where you are staying. Services and frequencies vary by route and time of day, so check the current Va y Ven or IE-TRAM timetable before relying on a particular late-evening connection.

If you are coming into Mérida from the Tren Maya station at Teya, La Plancha is particularly useful because the IE-TRAM network connects the two.

Arrive before sunset

There is a good argument for treating the movie as the end of an evening at La Plancha rather than the entire reason for visiting.

Arrive around an hour early and walk beside the lake while there is still daylight. Then either pick up something to eat or claim your place on the grass before the larger evening crowd appears.

A straightforward evening might look like this:

Around 5:45–6:00 pm: arrive at La Plancha.

6:00–6:30 pm: walk around the lake or get something to eat.

Around 6:30 pm: find the outdoor cinema area and settle down.

From 7:00 pm: expect the evening cinema programme to begin around this period.

This is easier than arriving at the advertised start time with children, chairs and bags and then trying to squeeze into the remaining patches of grass.

Is the outdoor cinema good for children?

Yes. This is one of the stronger free evening options in Mérida for families.

The setting is informal, there is space around the screening area, toilets are available within the park, and La Plancha itself has extensive family facilities.

The main consideration is bedtime.

Depending on the film length and actual projection time, you may not leave until well into the evening. Families with very young children may prefer to arrive early, enjoy part of the movie and leave when necessary rather than making finishing the film the objective.

A stroller is useful for younger children, although manoeuvring across crowded grass becomes less convenient once the audience is seated.

Is it worth going as a couple?

It can be.

This is a much more local, casual evening than cocktails on Paseo de Montejo or dinner around Santa Lucía. Bring a blanket, pick up something to eat and treat the film as background to an evening outdoors.

It works particularly well if you have already spent the day sightseeing and do not want another structured attraction.

It is also one of the rare Mérida evening plans that can cost almost nothing.

Who should skip it?

Outdoor cinema at La Plancha is not the right choice for everyone.

Skip it if you:

  • strongly prefer air conditioning
  • need cinema-quality sound
  • dislike sitting on grass
  • are travelling specifically to see one particular movie
  • are visiting during sustained heavy rain
  • have only one evening in Mérida and want to concentrate on the historic centre

If you only have a single night in the city, Mérida's central plazas and evening street life usually deserve priority.

If you have several nights, La Plancha becomes much easier to recommend.

How long should you allow?

Allow around three hours if you are combining a short walk, some food and the screening.

There is no reason to arrive hours in advance purely for the movie.

About 30–60 minutes before the programme begins is enough for most people. Go earlier if you have children or want plenty of choice about where to sit.

Accessibility and comfort

Much of La Plancha is connected by broad paved paths, but the outdoor cinema audience itself normally spreads across grass.

If somebody in your group has restricted mobility, arrive before the crowd builds and choose a position close to the edge of the grass rather than moving deep into the seated audience.

The official park site lists toilets, security, medical assistance and parking among the park services.

For specific accessibility requirements, it is sensible to confirm arrangements with the park before travelling.

The bigger reason to go

La Plancha is interesting because it has become more than an attraction built for visitors.

On weekend evenings, it functions as a large communal backyard for Mérida.

People walk dogs. Children use the park. Couples wander around the lake. Families eat together. Events appear around different corners of the site.

The outdoor cinema fits naturally into that pattern.

You are not travelling across Yucatán to see something monumental. You are spending an evening in a part of contemporary Mérida that residents actually use.

For many travellers, that is enough reason to make the short journey out of the historic centre.

Before you go

Check the latest Parque La Plancha social post on the afternoon of your visit.

The most important things to confirm are:

  • that the screening is going ahead
  • the actual movie
  • the advertised start time
  • any weather-related changes

The park itself is normally open daily from 7:00 am until 11:00 pm, so arriving early is rarely a problem.

The cinema is free, but the programme can change. Think of it as a flexible evening plan rather than a ticketed performance built around a guaranteed film.

Practical verdict

Go if: you have a free Saturday or Sunday evening in Mérida, particularly if you are travelling with children or want an inexpensive local night out.

Arrive: around 6:30 pm.

Bring: a blanket or low chair, mosquito repellent and water.

Transport: taxi or rideshare is easiest for most central visitors; driving and IE-TRAM are also practical.

Allow: roughly three hours if you want to explore some of La Plancha before the film.

Cost: free.

The outdoor cinema is unlikely to be the reason you travel to Mérida. But once you are here, it is precisely the sort of simple city experience that can make an extra evening worthwhile.
