Feria Yucatán Xmatkuil: Complete Visitor Guide

For most of the year, Xmatkuil is a small community on the southern edge of Mérida.

Then November arrives.

Livestock trailers begin moving toward the fairgrounds. Food stalls open. Carnival rides light up. Families arrive from across the state. Agricultural producers show cattle beside stages hosting some of Mexico's biggest performers. There are charreadas, exhibitions, commercial stands, regional food, mechanical rides, children's attractions and evenings when the road south from Mérida becomes a river of headlights.

This is the Feria Yucatán Xmatkuil, usually shortened simply to Xmatkuil.

It is Yucatán's major annual state fair and one of the largest recurring public events in the region.

For travelers, Xmatkuil offers something quite different from Mérida's colonial architecture, Maya archaeological sites or cenotes. This is not an attraction created primarily for visitors. It is a huge Yucatecan gathering where agriculture, livestock, commerce, food, popular music and family entertainment occupy the same fairground.

That is precisely why it can be worth going.

If you want an evening of local food and fairground atmosphere, it works. If you are traveling with children, there is plenty to occupy them. If you are interested in cattle, horses or the agricultural economy of Yucatán, there is considerably more depth here than the carnival rides suggest.

And if you are coming for a major concert, Xmatkuil becomes an event destination in its own right.

The practical difficulty is scale. Crowds can be enormous, traffic can become severe and the programme changes every year.

This guide explains how to plan it properly.

Feria Xmatkuil at a glance

For a first visit without a particular concert in mind, we would choose a weekday from late afternoon onward.

You will see the fair change from daytime agricultural and commercial activity into its more atmospheric evening version without immediately placing yourself in the biggest weekend crowds.

Those dates are now confirmed by the official fair website.

The official 2026 Feria Yucatán Xmatkuil dates are November 6–29.

The fair runs for more than three weeks, so there is no single Xmatkuil experience.

One visitor might spend a Wednesday afternoon looking through cattle exhibitions and regional products.

Another might arrive with children for food and rides.

Another might barely see the main fair before joining thousands of people heading toward a concert.

For 2026, several important events are already confirmed, including three major ticketed concerts and an unusually significant international livestock programme.

The complete day-by-day calendar, however, is not yet published.

That distinction matters.

What is already confirmed for Xmatkuil 2026

More concerts, performances, exhibitions and special-event dates should appear as November approaches.

Do not use a 2024 or 2025 concert calendar as though it were the 2026 programme.

A Saturday night combined with a major concert is close to the opposite of a quiet Xmatkuil visit.

Go for the atmosphere if that appeals to you, but do not choose November 14 because you think it will be an easy evening for casually exploring the fair.

A 10:00 pm concert does not mean you should aim to reach Xmatkuil at 9:30.

World Brahman Congress 2026 at Xmatkuil

One of the most interesting parts of the 2026 fair has little to do with pop concerts.

From November 10 through 15, 2026, Yucatán will host the XXII World Brahman Congress alongside the 29th National Brahman Exhibition at Xmatkuil.

This is an international livestock event bringing breeders, specialists, producers and industry representatives to Yucatán.

For travelers with even a passing interest in cattle, ranching or rural Yucatán, it makes the middle of the 2026 fair particularly interesting.

The Feria Xmatkuil has always had strong agricultural and livestock roots. The carnival rides and headline concerts may be more visible in contemporary advertising, but cattle exhibitions are not a decorative side attraction added to a music festival.

They are part of what Xmatkuil was built for.

The 2026 Brahman Congress brings that original identity sharply back into focus.

Livestock, agriculture, commerce and regional culture remain central to Xmatkuil even as the entertainment programme has grown.

If this side of the fair interests you, November 10–15 is the 2026 window we would target.

Do not assume, however, that a normal fair admission ticket provides access to every technical conference, private breeder activity or delegate event connected with the congress.

Specialized congress sessions may have their own registration and access rules.

The Government of Yucatán has published more information about the event through its official World Brahman Congress announcement.

What has not yet been confirmed for Xmatkuil 2026

As of August 30, several details travelers will eventually need are still pending.

These include:

• the complete Palenque programme
• the full free-concert calendar
• all charreada and equestrian dates
• the complete livestock exhibition timetable
• the 2026 general admission price
• the 2026 parking rate
• full opening hours
• ride promotions and mechanical-ride pricing
• the dedicated 2026 Va y Ven transport operation
• the final accessibility and concession policy
• some family and children's programming

We will update this guide as those details become official.

What happened in 2025 — useful context, not 2026 pricing

For comparison only, general admission in 2025 was MX$35 and official parking was MX$45.

The 2025 fair also introduced online ticketing for some fair and parking access.

Those figures can help you understand that basic entry to Xmatkuil has historically been inexpensive compared with the cost of headline concert tickets.

They should not be treated as confirmed 2026 prices.

The same applies to transport.

Dedicated and extended Va y Ven services operated for the 2025 fair, but wait for the Agencia de Transporte de Yucatán to publish its 2026 operation before planning around a particular route or timetable.

Which 2026 dates should you choose?

Your ideal date depends on why you are going.

If you simply want to understand Xmatkuil rather than attend one specific event, there is little advantage in deliberately choosing the busiest Saturday.

A Wednesday or Thursday can be a better travel experience.

Is Feria Xmatkuil worth visiting?

For the right traveler, yes.

But Xmatkuil should not displace something like Uxmal or Chichén Itzá from a short first trip simply because the fair happens to be running.

It works best when you already have time in Mérida and want to see a different side of Yucatán.

Xmatkuil is particularly worthwhile if you like

• regional food
• fairs and carnivals
• Mexican popular culture
• livestock and agriculture
• horses and charreada
• people-watching
• live music
• traveling with children
• contemporary Yucatecan life
• large local public events

You may want to skip it if

• you only have two or three days in Yucatán
• large crowds make you uncomfortable
• you dislike carnival rides and loud environments
• you are expecting a historic or traditional village festival
• you need a tightly controlled evening schedule
• you have an early flight or major excursion the next morning

The point of Xmatkuil is not architectural beauty.

It is the scale and mixture of things happening in one place.

A prize bull, a marquesita stand, a tractor display, a children's ride and a huge regional Mexican concert can all belong to the same evening.

What exactly is Feria Yucatán Xmatkuil?

Xmatkuil is Yucatán's state fair.

Its origins are strongly connected to agriculture, livestock, industry and regional commerce.

The first edition was inaugurated on November 8, 1974, under the much more descriptive name:

Feria Nacional Agrícola, Ganadera, Industrial y Artesanal del Estado de Yucatán.

The name tells you what the fair was originally designed to showcase.

Farmers, ranchers, artisans, businesses and producers had a large state venue where they could exhibit animals, products and economic activity.

Entertainment grew around that foundation.

Over time, Xmatkuil became something larger: agricultural exhibition, commercial expo, food fair, amusement park, concert venue and annual family ritual rolled together.

Xmatkuil has been part of Yucatán's November calendar since the 1970s.

The fair celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024.

Today, the official programme can use multiple spaces across the grounds, including:

• Centro de Espectáculos Montejo

• Palenque
• Escenario Raventón
• Plaza de Toros
• Lienzo Charro
• Circo
• livestock exhibition areas
• commercial halls
• food areas

Not every venue operates in exactly the same way every day.

Check the programme for your specific date rather than arriving with a list of things you assume will all be happening simultaneously.

The livestock side of Xmatkuil

If you only see photographs of the rides and concerts, it is easy to misunderstand the fair.

Livestock is fundamental to Xmatkuil.

Depending on the year's programme, visitors can encounter:

• cattle exhibitions
• breed competitions
• breeders
• horses
• agricultural associations
• livestock judging
• equipment
• producer demonstrations
• state and national exhibitions
• specialist events
• commercial agricultural stands

This part of the fair is usually more interesting during the day than at midnight.

Families also tend to enjoy the animal areas, although children should be supervised carefully around working livestock spaces.

Do not treat the animals as a petting zoo unless an area is explicitly designed for that purpose.

The people exhibiting livestock are often there professionally.

For 2026, the World Brahman Congress makes this side of Xmatkuil especially significant.

Food at Feria Xmatkuil

Come hungry.

Food is one of the easiest ways for a visitor to enjoy Xmatkuil without needing to understand the programme.

The exact vendors change, but expect a mixture of Yucatecan food, Mexican fair food, grills, snacks, sweets and drinks.

You may encounter things such as:

• cochinita or lechón
• panuchos and salbutes
• tacos
• grilled meats
• tortas
• marquesitas
• esquites
• churros
• ice cream
• sweets
• snack foods
• beer and soft drinks

Not every stand is a culinary destination.

This is a fair.

Some stalls are excellent, others are simply convenient places to eat between rides.

Look for places with steady local turnover rather than assuming the largest illuminated stall is automatically the best.

Carry some cash.

Card acceptance has become more common, but a temporary food stand is not where we would want to discover that the payment terminal has lost signal.

The carnival rides

After dark, the mechanical rides become one of the most visible parts of Xmatkuil.

The evening atmosphere is a large part of the appeal, particularly for families and groups of friends.

Expect the usual spectrum from gentle children's attractions to larger thrill rides.

Ride operators, prices and promotions can change each year.

Do not assume that fair admission includes unlimited rides.

It normally does not.

Treat rides as a separate part of your budget and check the 2026 arrangements once they are announced.

For families, going earlier has two advantages:

1. the grounds are easier to navigate before the largest evening crowds arrive;
2. younger children can enjoy the fair without the visit extending deep into the night.

Concerts and live entertainment

Xmatkuil is effectively several music venues inside one fair.

The Centro de Espectáculos Montejo hosts large ticketed shows such as the first three confirmed 2026 concerts.

Other stages traditionally host a broader programme of popular music and public entertainment.

The distinction is important.

A concert happening "at Xmatkuil" is not automatically included with general fair admission.

For major 2026 shows, check whether you need:

• a fair admission ticket
• a separate concert ticket
• both
• an assigned section or table
• a digital ticket downloaded in advance

Use the official fair website and the ticketing provider linked by organizers rather than buying from a social-media reseller.

Charreada, horses and regional events

Xmatkuil's Lienzo Charro and other arena spaces regularly bring an equestrian dimension to the fair.

Charreada is Mexico's traditional competitive horsemanship culture and is particularly worth considering if your trip is otherwise dominated by archaeological sites and city sightseeing.

You may also encounter:

• horse exhibitions
• rodeo-style events
• breed demonstrations
• cattle competitions
• arena performances

These are programme-dependent.

Once the complete 2026 calendar is published, choose a day with an event you actually want to see rather than assuming there will be one whenever you arrive.

Commercial and artisan exhibitions

Part of Xmatkuil still functions much like a giant trade and consumer fair.

Expect stalls and exhibition areas covering a wide range of products.

Depending on the year, these can include:

• local crafts
• clothing
• household goods
• food products
• agricultural products
• vehicles
• machinery
• government services
• regional businesses
• small producers
• national brands

Not all of this will interest a short-term traveler.

That is fine.

Xmatkuil is not curated like a museum.

Wandering past the stands is part of seeing what the fair actually is.

How long should you spend at Xmatkuil?

For most travelers, four to six hours is enough for a first visit.

That gives you time to:

• walk through the agricultural areas
• see the livestock
• browse some commercial stands
• eat
• go on rides
• experience the fair after dark

If you have a concert ticket, allow considerably longer.

You may arrive in late afternoon and not leave until after midnight.

Do not plan around the theoretical drive time alone. The transport part of the evening can become a major part of the schedule.

The best time of day to visit

For a general visit, we like late afternoon into evening.

Arriving around 4:00 or 5:00 pm gives you some daylight for livestock and exhibition areas before the fair becomes more atmospheric after sunset.

It also avoids spending the hottest part of the day walking across open areas.

Go earlier if

• livestock is your main interest
• you have young children
• you dislike heavy crowds
• you want easier photographs
• you want to leave before the biggest nightlife rush

Go later if

• you mainly want rides
• you are meeting friends
• you have a concert ticket
• the evening entertainment is your priority

Avoid the biggest weekend nights if

• this is just a casual visit
• you are traveling with a baby or toddler
• you have limited mobility
• you hate traffic
• you need to be somewhere else at a fixed time afterward

Xmatkuil crowds can be enormous

Do not underestimate this.

During the 2025 fair, Yucatán authorities reported 421,789 visitors on a single Sunday.

That is not normal weekday attendance, but it shows the scale Xmatkuil can reach.

On that day, parking saturation and congestion became severe enough that authorities temporarily restricted vehicle access from parts of the Periférico.

On peak dates, Xmatkuil becomes one of the busiest places in Yucatán.

If you have flexibility, this is one of those situations where choosing the less glamorous Tuesday or Wednesday can make the entire experience better.

A major concert night will naturally be busy.

But there is little reason to voluntarily join the biggest Sunday crush just to eat, wander around and ride the Ferris wheel.

How to get to Feria Xmatkuil from Mérida

Xmatkuil is south of Mérida.

From Centro Histórico, the drive can take around 25 minutes in light traffic.

A common road approach runs south along Calle 50, crossing the Periférico and continuing toward Xmatkuil.

During the fair, forget the normal journey time.

Traffic can add substantially to it.

By car

Driving gives you independence but leaves you dealing with parking and congestion.

It makes sense if:

• you are already renting a car
• you are traveling with children
• you are carrying equipment
• you are coming from outside Mérida
• you plan to arrive at a quieter time

It makes less sense if you are going specifically to a huge Saturday-night concert and expect a painless exit.

Va y Ven public transport

Special Va y Ven arrangements have operated during previous fairs.

In 2025, the transport authority served Xmatkuil with multiple routes and extended service, including connections from different parts of metropolitan Mérida.

The 2026 operation has not yet been published.

Wait for the Agencia de Transporte de Yucatán to confirm:

• participating routes
• operating hours
• pickup points
• fares
• any temporary services

For a traveler staying in Mérida Centro, public transport can be a very sensible way to avoid parking.

Just make sure you understand the final return service before relying on it after a late concert.

Taxi or rideshare

Uber, DiDi and conventional taxis can remove the parking problem.

They do not remove the traffic problem.

On a busy night, your driver still has to reach the fair.

Pickup after a major concert can also be chaotic because thousands of people are trying to leave at the same time.

A practical approach is to:

• agree on a clear pickup area
• expect to walk away from the densest exit
• keep your phone charged
• avoid relying on one exact pickup minute

Private driver

A private driver is worth considering for:

• families
• groups
• travelers staying outside Mérida
• premium concert tickets
• anyone who wants a vehicle waiting rather than searching for a ride afterward

It is not a magic traffic bypass.

But knowing who is collecting you and having the return arranged in advance can make the end of a long fair night much easier.

Parking at Xmatkuil

Official parking is normally available around the fairgrounds.

The 2026 parking fee has not yet been announced.

For context, official parking cost MX$45 in 2025.

Do not plan around that price until 2026 rates are confirmed.

On busy dates, the more important issue is not the price.

It is capacity.

If you are driving on a major concert night or peak weekend, arrive well before the crowd reaches its maximum.

Do not assume you can leave Mérida 30 minutes before an event and simply park beside the entrance.

What will Xmatkuil cost in 2026?

The basic 2026 admission price is still pending.

Historically, entering the fair itself has been relatively inexpensive.

The larger cost depends on what you do once inside.

Budget separately for:

• general fair admission
• parking or transport
• food and drinks
• carnival rides
• games
• shopping
• ticketed concerts
• premium seating or tables

A family spending an evening eating and using rides will naturally spend far more than someone visiting the livestock exhibitions and walking around.

Major concerts exist in another price category entirely.

For 2026, the first confirmed headline shows range from several hundred pesos for general areas to several thousand pesos for premium sections.

Do you need cash?

Bring some.

You do not need to carry a huge amount, but small notes are useful.

Large established vendors may accept cards or electronic payment.

Temporary stands and small operators can be less predictable.

Mobile networks also become less dependable when tens of thousands of phones are concentrated in the same place.

A sensible setup is:

• some cash
• one physical bank card
• a charged phone
• screenshots of important digital tickets

Do not keep every card and all your cash together in one loose pocket.

Visiting Xmatkuil with children

Xmatkuil is a family event.

Children can see animals, eat, ride attractions and experience a very ordinary part of Yucatecan family culture.

The challenge is scale.

A child who is enjoying the fair at 6:00 pm may be exhausted by 10:30.

For younger children

Go earlier.

A good family visit might look like:

4:00 pm: arrive
4:15–5:30 pm: livestock and exhibitions
5:30–6:30 pm: eat
6:30–8:30 pm: children's rides and games
8:30–9:00 pm: start heading out

You get the evening lights without trying to keep a five-year-old awake until after midnight.

Choose a meeting point

This matters even for groups of adults.

The grounds are large and crowds can become dense.

Pick an obvious location when you arrive and tell children where to go if anyone becomes separated.

Strollers

A stroller can be useful for younger children but cumbersome in the densest crowds.

If you can choose your date, a weekday is substantially easier.

Accessibility

Accessibility arrangements can change by edition.

Previous fairs have included measures such as accessible parking and concessions for some visitors with disabilities or older adults.

The 2026 policy has not yet been published, so do not rely on a previous year's concession without checking.

The size of the fairground itself is worth considering.

Even where paths are accessible, a full visit can involve a considerable amount of walking.

Travelers with limited mobility should prioritize the areas they actually want to see rather than attempting to cover the entire recinto.

Is Xmatkuil safe?

The fair is a major public event with formal security, emergency and traffic operations.

Previous editions have included:

• police
• videovigilance
• traffic officers
• firefighters
• paramedics
• canine units

The more realistic visitor risks are the ordinary ones associated with a huge crowded event.

Use sensible precautions:

• keep your phone and wallet secure
• carry only what you need
• keep children close
• establish a meeting point
• drink water
• obey ride restrictions
• do not drink heavily if you still need to navigate transport home
• keep your phone battery for the return journey
• use official ticket sources

A small cross-body bag is more practical than carrying an open tote through a packed concert crowd.

What should you wear?

November is usually more comfortable in Mérida than the hottest months of the year.

It can still be warm.

The fairground is large and you will probably walk considerably more than expected.

Wear:

• light clothing
• comfortable shoes
• sun protection for a daytime visit
• a hat if arriving early
• light rain protection if showers are possible
• clothing you do not mind wearing around livestock areas and dusty outdoor spaces

This is not an occasion that requires dressing formally unless you specifically want to for a concert or social event.

Comfort wins.

Should foreign visitors go to Xmatkuil?

Yes, if the event interests you.

You do not need special knowledge of Yucatán to enjoy the fair.

But you will get more from it if you understand that Xmatkuil is not primarily a tourist attraction.

It is a state fair used by local families, ranchers, businesses, producers and concertgoers.

That means:

• much of the signage will be in Spanish
• announcements will normally be in Spanish
• not every vendor will speak English
• the entertainment programme is aimed first at a Mexican audience
• local families are attending for their own enjoyment, not performing for visitors

Basic Spanish helps.

It is also part of the appeal.

Travelers who have spent several days moving between hotels, archaeological sites and organized tours can find Xmatkuil refreshingly ordinary.

Do you need a tour for Xmatkuil?

No.

For almost everyone, Xmatkuil is easier to visit independently.

You need:

1. transport;
2. a rough idea of what is happening that day;
3. enough time.

A traditional guided tour adds little if your plan is simply to eat, walk around and use the rides.

A guide becomes more relevant if you have a specialist interest in:

• livestock
• Yucatecan agriculture
• cattle breeding
• charreada
• the history of the fair
• rural economic life in Yucatán

For transport, a private driver can be useful even when a guide is unnecessary.

Three sensible ways to visit

First-time visitor: late afternoon and evening

This is the version we recommend to most travelers.

Arrive: around 4:00–5:00 pm
Stay: 4–6 hours

Start with the livestock and exhibition areas while there is still daylight.

Walk through the commercial areas.

Eat once you have seen where the busiest food stalls are.

Then move toward the rides and evening entertainment.

Leave before midnight unless you have a reason to stay.

This gives you a representative version of Xmatkuil without turning the entire day into a fairground marathon.

Livestock-focused visit

For 2026, consider November 10–15.

Arrive earlier.

Spend more of your time around the agricultural and livestock areas, particularly programming associated with the World Brahman Congress and National Brahman Exhibition.

Check specialist schedules before leaving Mérida.

You can still stay into the evening for food and entertainment, but the livestock programme should determine your arrival time rather than the carnival rides.

Concert night

Keep the rest of the day light.

Have breakfast or an easy morning in Mérida.

Return to your hotel in the afternoon.

Charge your phone.

Eat early or plan to eat at the fair.

Leave for Xmatkuil with a large traffic buffer.

Walk around before the concert rather than trying to arrive at the last possible minute.

After the show, expect a slow exit.

Do not book a 12:30 am restaurant reservation across Mérida and expect the evening to cooperate.

What not to combine with Xmatkuil

A common travel-planning mistake is treating the fair as something you can casually add after a full day trip.

Technically, you can.

That does not mean you should.

We would not recommend:

Uxmal + Ruta Puuc + cenote + Xmatkuil concert

or:

Chichén Itzá return to Mérida + dinner reservation + Xmatkuil

or:

full-day beach trip + drive back + major Saturday fair night

The result is normally fatigue and a rushed fair visit.

If Xmatkuil matters to you, give it the evening.

Use the morning for something simple in Mérida.

Where to stay for Feria Xmatkuil

You do not need to stay in Xmatkuil.

For almost every traveler, Mérida is the better base.

The fair is temporary. Mérida gives you restaurants, hotels, museums and things to do during the rest of your trip.

Mérida Centro

Good for first-time visitors.

You will have the easiest access to normal sightseeing and a large choice of restaurants.

The trade-off is a longer drive south through the city compared with staying near the Periférico.
